Axel L. Mercado MPH, PA-C

Mr. Axel Mercado was born in Ponce, P.R, raised in New York City and relocated from Miami, Florida. He likes to be addressed by his first name “Axel” and describes himself as a patient advocate. Axel is Bi-lingual in English and Spanish. His goal is to help our patients achieve their best outcomes and health possible through an honest, open patient-provider relationship.

Axel is a veteran of the U.S Army, Army Reserve and Florida National Guard. While serving his country and state, he worked as a Medical Specialist which motivated him to become a Physician Assistant (PA) after working alongside PA’s.

He graduated in 1996 from Nova-SouthEastern University in Davie, Florida where he obtained a Bachelor Degree in PA Studies and a Masters Degree in Public Health. The programs voted him the Class President for the PA and Masters class. When he graduated, he was awarded the “Universities Chancellor's Award” and selected as the “Student Government Leader of the Year”.

Axel comes to “Forest Hills Immediate Care” with over 25 years of experience treating patients. His medical knowledge is diverse. It includes Primary Care, Urgent Care, Admissions Hosptialist and In-Patient Hospital Internal Medicine care. While in Miami, he was instrumental in getting its first PA program where he was the Academic Coordinator and an Associate Professor for the PA Program.

Prior to moving to North Carolina to practice, he was Specializing in Wound Management where he treated patients throughout the continuum of healthcare. He managed patients in their homes, out-patient clinics, Wound Care Centers, Nursing Homes, Skilled Care Facilities, Long-Term Acute Care and Hospital in-patient. Axel treated patients with pressure injuries, vascular and arterial ulcers, diabetic ulcers and complicated surgical wounds.

When not devoting his time to patients, you can find Axel hiking, mountain biking and traveling the world which is why he is part owner in a travel agency - Odyssean Travel.
